Network of networks!
It all started due to the fact that my personal life is in a severe
imbalance with the professional one. I have started to look closely on the
current socio-economical pattern according to which our society works (in the
Western World at least).
The result is that I am in the middle of a struggle with the old
established business model that, in my opinion, is no longer feasible.
M8 motorway (Glasgow area) is a constant traffic jam during the critical hours of
the day. I saw the same issue in other parts of Europe while travelling back
home.
In order to keep the momentum, a company should be truly open to
a flexible work approach and remote working. Technicians / engineers should be
allowed to work from abroad on UK (or worldwide) projects, there are few
aspects that could be mentioned:
- I know that there are Global Design Centers
to do the bulk of the work, but I must bring into attention the idea of network
of networks. We must acknowledge that we are applying the very old
business approach of centralizing delivery means/resources, to provide better
control of it. I understand that, but in this process, we lose so much value by
failing to attract those who are not willing to move (where the offices are) or
to submit to the 9am – 5pm pattern or to daily commute to work. By losing a
person/employee we lose also the direct access to his acquaintances (circle of
professionals) and that’s the meaning that I give to the network of
networks idea.
- This will be an action that supports
the employee care and mental health matters
perspective. Those two are hugely publicised but stuck at the declarative
stage.
- From the delivery process approach,
this could represent a turning point. Innovation is also related to the way in
which a business / activity is conducted!
Agreed that this
arrangement is less suitable for managers.
Second, this will
truly consider the inclusion and diversity issues by allowing employees to,
first chose their work environment and, second, be closer to their families.
